Ramzan Kadyrov the Great
Kadyrov the junior has become the supreme ruler of Chechnya after the assassination of his father Akhmad-Khadji Kadyrov that occurred on 9 May 2004. This badly educated young man with an inclination to violence has become the nightmare of Chechnya.
The two images of the present Chechnya have been in strong contradiction to one another for the last two years. The Chechnya of official declarations has become the post-conflict zone with the only necessity of reconstructing its economical infrastructure. It is being revived under the rule of the actual Chechen leader, Ramzan Kadyrov, who has gained love and respect of all his subordinates. Ramzan Kadyrov is being depicted as a trustworthy pro-Moscow Chechen leader, who is reconstructing Grozny, taking care of children and the disabled people and following all recommendations of his PR advisors, including master classes in the Russian language.
In March 2006, I came to Barcelona to make a report on the armed conflict in the North Caucasus. The University of Barcelona held a conference on the wars of contemporary Europe.
This is when I proposed that we develop the already-developing cloudless picture of Ramzan Kadyrov further on and imagine Ramzan Kadyrov wearing a proper suit and a bow-tie, making speeches about his devotion to the peace process, giving amnesty to all the lost souls of young people, for whom he is just a caring father, and proclaiming his absolute respect to women, including and particularly Anna Politkovskaya. We would believe his assertions about his complete unawareness of numerous severe human rights abuses on the territory, which is under his absolute rule. We would forget what kind of power this young dictator is imposing on all the people and what kind of methods he is using to get rid of his rivals and opponents.
It is really true that quite a number of people around him are former combatants whose sins are forgiven for their declared loyalty to Kadyrov, and not just for their own physical integrity but the security of their relatives, as well. They know pretty well what might happen to those who dare to betray Ramzan Kadyrov.

Mayrbek Eshiev surrendered in 2004, and Ramzan made him one of his commanders in the structure of the Anti-Terrorist Center (the ATC). Hardly had Ramzan established that Eshiev kept aiding combatants, when all his family was annihilated, including little children. The Guardian journalist Nick Paton Walsh mentioned that episode with Mayrbek Eshiev in his article published in 2006. It was entitled “The land of warlords”. In the article he interviewed two defectors from the militants who had served under Baysarov. Talking to the British journalist, Zair and Rashid said that Eshiev, known under the nickname of the Mullah, had been caught feeding information to the separatists. – Ramzan ordered that his entire family be wiped out, they said.

The other ones do not want to share Mayrbek Eshiev’s fate. It doesn’t secure their lives for long, though.
